Talbina s a porridge produced using barley flour, formed by adding milk and honey to the dried barley powder. The name comes from the Arabic word laban meaning yoghurt (fermented churned milk), in view of its similarity to yoghurt, as it is delicate and white. Barley is a good source of insoluble and soluble dietary fibre. It helps in digestion and improves immune function.

It was recommended by Prophet Muhammad PBUH to his companions when suffering through an illness or weakness of any kind. There are many Ahadeeth that briefly describe its importance in the life of the Holy Prophet and his companions.


Nutrient-rich: Barley is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Talbina provides essential nutrients like B vitamins, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

Digestive aid: Talbina is believed to be gentle on the digestive system and can be consumed by individuals with gastrointestinal issues. The high fiber content may promote regular bowel movements and support digestive health.

Soothing and hydrating: Talbina is often consumed as a comfort food, especially when someone is feeling unwell or recovering from an illness. It’s believed to have a soothing and hydrating effect.

Potential for weight management: The fiber in barley may help with satiety, potentially aiding in weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness and reducing overeating.

Immune support: Barley contains beta-glucans, which are believed to have immune-boosting properties. Consuming talbina may provide some support to the immune system.

Energy source: Talbina can provide a good source of carbohydrates, which can be a source of energy, making it a suitable food for those needing an energy boost.

Nutritional support during illness: Talbina is often consumed when someone is sick, as it is seen as a nourishing food that is easy to digest and may help in recovery.

How to Cook

Add one table spoon in a cup of hot water. Cook for five minutes unless its color turns to light brown. Add two cups of milk and stir. Cook for two more minutes. Add some honey or sugar as per taste. It can also be served without sugar. Now Talbina is ready. It can be consumed with spoon or can drink sip by sip. Always use it lukewarm. It can also be served as cold. If you wish you can prepare it in one go for the whole day. Or you can prepare it fresh, every time. But ingredients ratio will remain same. If you want to double the quantity or more than that, there is no issue but ratio of  Talbina, water and milk of will remain the same.
