Green vitriol, also known as ferrous sulfate or iron sulfate, is a chemical compound with the formula FeSO₄·xH₂O. It is a greenish crystalline solid that occurs naturally as the mineral melanterite. Green vitriol has various industrial and laboratory uses. It’s used in the production of iron pigments, in water purification processes, as a reducing agent in chemical reactions, and in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Additionally, it has historical significance as it was commonly used in alchemy and early chemical experiments.
