Overview

Dragon’s blood is a bright red resin that is obtained from several species of trees belonging to the genus Dracaena, particularly Dracaena draco (Dragon tree) native to the Canary Islands and Dracaena cinnabari (Socotra dragon tree) native to the Socotra archipelago. The resin is also harvested from certain species of palms in the genus Daemonorops, known as rattan palms. To obtain dragon’s blood resin, incisions are made in the bark of the tree or palm, allowing the sap to ooze out. The sap solidifies upon exposure to air, forming droplets or tears of resin that can be collected.
