Overview

Winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus), also known as Goa bean, four-angled bean, four-cornered bean, Manila bean, Mauritius bean is a tropical legume plant native to New Guinea. It grows lavishly in hot, humid countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia to India, Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Almost all the parts of the plant including immature pods, mature seeds, tender leaves and shoots, flowers and tubers are used in the East-Asian cuisine.

Benefits

High in Fiber:

Winged beans are an excellent source of dietary fiber, both soluble and insoluble. Fiber aids in digestion, promotes regular bowel movements, and helps maintain a healthy gut microbiota. It also contributes to satiety, which may assist in weight management and reduce the risk of overeating.

Rich in Protein:

Winged beans are a good source of plant-based protein, making them an ideal protein source for vegetarians and vegans. Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues, supporting muscle health, and maintaining overall bodily functions.

Nutrient-Dense:

Winged beans are packed with essential nutrients, including folate, iron, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds. These nutrients play vital roles in various bodily functions, including energy production, immune system support, and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

Heart Health:

The fiber, potassium, and antioxidants found in black beans may contribute to heart health by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of hypertension, and supporting overall cardiovascular function. Additionally, black beans contain flavonoids and other compounds that have been associated with improved heart health.

Blood Sugar Regulation:

The soluble fiber in Winged beans helps slow down the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream, which can help stabilize blood sugar levels. This can be beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition.

Weight Management:

Incorporating Winged beans into meals can promote feelings of fullness and satiety due to their high fiber and protein content. As a result, they may help reduce calorie intake, control appetite, and support weight management efforts.

Antioxidant Properties:

Winged beans contain various antioxidants, including anthocyanins, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. These compounds may offer protection against chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders.
