Embelia ribes, commonly known as false black pepper or Vidanga, is a woody climbing shrub belonging to the Primulaceae family. It is native to India and other parts of Southeast Asia. Embelia ribes is a perennial shrub that climbs on other plants or structures with the help of tendrils. It has glossy, elliptical leaves and produces small, round berries that turn red when ripe.In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, various parts of the Embelia ribes plant, especially the berries, are used for their medicinal properties. Vidanga is valued for its anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) properties and has been traditionally used to expel intestinal worms and parasites. It is also used in formulations for digestive disorders, respiratory conditions, and as a general health tonic.Apart from its anthelmintic action, Embelia ribes is also used in Ayurveda for its carminative (relieving flatulence), digestive, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to support gastrointestinal health, improve appetite, and aid in detoxification.
