The flowers are analgesic, an aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, antipathetic, antiseptic, astringent, brain tonic, demulcent, diuretic, nutrient, refrigerant and sedative. They have a generally calming and sedative effect upon the nervous system, reputedly reducing the sex drive and making them useful in the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and similar disorders.
Useful in diarrhea, bowel complaints, scrofula, inflamed tissues in various parts of the body and as a demulcent for bronchial troubles like asthma, bronchitis, cough and tuberculosis. Also used for edema, piles, kidney troubles, catarrh of the bladder and irritations of the prostate. Also valued as a cardiac tonic in palpitation of heart.
